Anabel- I too love the flower theme! I was mulling over different edible flower ideas that could continue the thread, when I remembered the flowering arugula in our garden. Originally, I was planning to harvest the last standing leaves and compost the flowers and stalks, but our flower talk got me thinking, and upon some googling, I learned that the flowers are indeed edible and provide a nice peppery flavor (along with some class!).
Arugula is my favorite salad green, hands down. Eric likes to make Obama jokes whenever I mention arugula; however this dish had him making serious proclamations along the lines of "best salad ever." And, I gotta say, it really is top notch. It's almost like dessert with the sweet strawberries and creamy goat cheese. Also, hazelnuts are straight up bangarang.
Ps. I realize posting about gardening and flower arranging is somewhat nauseatingly lovely in that way blogs tend to be. I recently came across this project and thought I might share it as a counter balance to the idillic posts.
Pps. (Re: bangs) Oh, Mackenzine, sweep to the side! I still haven't watched the new episode! I talked Eric into watching the first episode of the first season thinking he might want to catch up and join in on the second season viewing, however he wasn't super moved. He said he was entertained but that it seems like a soap opera. I was wondering, if OITNB is relatable for men? I feel like I only ever hear women rave about it. Anyhow, I'm super excited for the new season. Am hoping to get some quality viewing in on Thursday!
For the salad:
Bowl arugula (half a bunch?) & arugula flowers*
Handful of strawberries (think I used about 7-9), sliced
Handful roasted hazelnuts, chopped
2 Tablespoons goat cheese
For the dressing:
2 teaspoons maple syrup
2 Tablespoons olive oil
Juice of 1/2-1 lemon
Salt and pepper
*While the flowers are lovely and the inspiration for this dish, they really are more of an aesthetic touch; please don't let a lack of blooms deter you from making this super salad!
